What is a Hackday?

The true potential of Raspberry Pi, the number one gadget of 2012, is set to be uncovered at the first Raspberry Pi hack day in the UK.

CPC have teamed up with Hackday expert Dom Hodgson to provide this 24 hour challenge which will see 100 competitors, working as either individuals or teams, pitted against each other as they attempt to build something great while incorporating Raspberry Pi.  As with all Hackday events, the brief is open with all teams having to present their creations to a panel of stellar judges including LeedsHack’s Dom Hodgson, experts from the University of Central Lancashire and CPC's Head of Marketing, with the overall winner taking away a money can’t buy prize.
Equipped with just a room, unlimited power, internet access and dinner & breakfast, participants will be asked to test their coding and design skills and develop soft- or hardware using the credit card sized computer.  Competitors can work individually or in teams of up to four and are free to solder and electrical hack to their hearts content.

A jam element will be integral to the event in which spectators can explore the Pi and discover coding basis, as experts from UCLan will be on hand to offer assistance suitable for every level of ability.

What is a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board Linux computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools.
This diminutive computer is capable of anything a desktop PC can do including spreadsheets, word-processing, games and the output of high-definition video.  The Raspberry Pi has a Broadcom BCM2835 system on a chip (SoC), which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor (The firmware includes a number of "Turbo" modes so that the user can attempt overclocking, up-to 1 GHz, without affecting the warranty), VideoCore IV GPU, and originally shipped with 256 megabytes of RAM, later upgraded to 512MB. It does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, but uses an SD card for booting and long-term storage.

Software and Hardware

Like many Hackday briefs, this is very much an open challenge in which CPC and Leedshack want you to be as creative as possible.  As such, this can be either a Software or Hardware hack allowing soldering and electrical hacking to take place.

Internet Access

Yes there is Internet Access, but like all Hackdays we’ve got 100 people each with numerous devices connected to the internet and as such at times the connection might be slow but we can work around that.
